We've chosen to break new ground by transforming leftover fabric from our swimsuits into scrunchies. This is important because a staggering 85% of textiles worldwide end up as waste annually. That translates to roughly 92 million tons of fabric discarded each year. Unlike other waste materials, these fabrics don't decompose, meaning they remain in landfills forever.
We knew we could make a difference. But when exploring sustainable fashion practices, the common theme was recycled packaging. Adicora wanted to go further and find a way to reuse fabric scraps for a better cause. Like our swimwear, these scrunchies will be handmade by a group of incredible artisans who are single mothers in Venezuela.
Our swimwear manufacturing process already has a smaller carbon footprint than fast-fashion brands. Now, by reusing materials, we're not only limiting fabric waste and its environmental impact, but this project also benefits a worthy cause. We've partnered with Todo Por La Sonrisa De Un Nino (“All for the smile of a child”), a charity in Valencia, Venezuela, that supports underprivileged children. Their goal is to make sure these children have food, education, clothing, and housing. Founder Alexandra Mora, spoke to us about her story and passion behind this organization. So, as well as a cash donation, we recently donated scrunchies to this organization and will be selling them on our website, with a portion of the proceeds going to Todo Por La Sonrisa De Un Nino.
We would like to thank Maria Teresa Hernández for connecting us with Alexandra and her organization. As well, on July 5th of this summer she was able to talk to these girls personally and hand deliver our scrunchies to them. She described the joy she saw and felt seeing how excited these children were to receive the scrunchies, and we are so thankful to be a part of it!
Our hope is to not only make a positive environmental impact but also bring joy to these children. We want to encourage other brands to join us in finding creative ways to reuse leftover fabrics. Together, we can significantly reduce the effects of textile waste on our planet. We feel this is a great wave that we would like to ripple within the fashion industry. From beginning to the end there is a story here, a purpose, and hopefully the start of a movement.
